Two subways in the centre of Gateshead were redesigned and restored using digital images of local people printed onto ceramic tiles. The projects were the result of collaboration between the artist and engineers in the Highways and Construction Section, Gateshead Council.
The Blue Subway in Hopper Street incorporates surface treatments and decorative lighting. Over 200 local people agreed to be ‘digitally featured’ in the subway.
The Orpheus Subway, once again, involved the artist working with local people, Eight people were featured as characters from Orpheus and the Underworld in the final designs. The overall design is enhanced by sequenced lighting.
